Since I have stopped buying physical Newspapers, I have a daily visit to my most favourite Web Locations for news. I still visit, the usual, TimesOnline, Telegraph, Gaurdian, NYtimes,  The BuffingtonPost and so on... and I do it mainly on my iPad these days. This article that seems to have made it to a lot of TV channels too,  made me Smile with a Raised Eyebrow.  Becuase regardless of your political persuasion This is should be causing alarm for anyone in the Free World making political observations of any kind and writing about it!

I guess it is very easy to take whatever you have said in the past out of context. Recently in UK we have seen number of high powered officials, MPs and Ministers that had to resign for saying something in private. However, this story is taking the whole question of freedom of speech to a whole new level, where just talking about WikiLeaks on Facebook or Twitter could theoretically endanger someone's job prospects. You can see the story here.

Here is the email sent out from "Office of Career Services"

Date: November 30, 2010 15:26:53 EST:
Hi students,

We received a call today from a SIPA alumnus who is working at the State Department. He asked us to pass along the following information to anyone who will be applying for jobs in the federal government, since all would require a background investigation and in some instances a security clearance.

The documents released during the past few months through Wikileaks are still considered classified documents. He recommends that you DO NOT post links to these documents nor make comments on social media sites such as Facebook or through Twitter. Engaging in these activities would call into question your ability to deal with confidential information, which is part of most positions with the federal government.

Regards,
Office of Career Services

After all we all know that what we say here on the web through social media web tools is not the same as talking down the pub? Another-words we all accept that what we say down the pub stays down the pub, or else becomes hearsay and therefore one cannot prosecute you for hearsay. Also we are fully aware, when we say something about our boss online then its there for everyone to see for ever, including our boss, and if it is taken out of context then we are indeed in big trouble.

None the less it is questionable if anyone should be fired for just having an opinion? For example, Saying that you dislike your boss may be uncomfortable for the boss to hear, but this should not be a stackable offence. We understand that there is a fine line between personal and professional statements on the web and I think after this episode, from now on everyone in web business should be very careful about any statements they might make in Twitter, Facebook etc...  Personally, I have always been careful when I Blog or make an statement in a public forum to  ensure that I either quote someone else opinion or if it is my own opinion then I normally read it over and over again to ensure I am not attacking anyone of any particular Political Persuasion.

However, what has definitely changed now is if one is making an opinion about a published article, then one must also ensure that the article is politically correct and the content is not subject to any dispute. I think observing this protocol is going to be a tall order for anyone active in Blogosphere or twitter. In fact I have a feeling just talking about this subject; I may be upsetting some customers somewhere in the globe. So I better take this opportunity and say in advance that if I have upset anyone for any of the topics on my Blog site, then I am profusely sorry. #Grin#

By The Way, I am sorry I could not quote anything from WikiLeak as every time I try get there I get this below, any ideas why this is happening?

Oops! Google Chrome could not find wikileaks.org
