At the Google I/O held in San Francisco on Thursday, Google announced that its new product Computing Engine will be available in the market with an immediate effect. Which is very exciting news as the computing engine from the IT giant is a latest addition to Google’s official product range of Google Cloud Storage, Google App Engine and Google BigQuery.
Google Computing Engine, an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS) is set to win the race against the its top contenders – Microsoft’s Azure and EC2 by Amazon.
Furthermore, on the service, Urs Hölzle, senior VP of Infrastructure at Chocolate Factory, said: “Google could provide raw virtual machines and the raw compute, storage and networking capacity underneath them at a much better price than its rivals – up to 50 per cent more compute than other infrastructure cloud providers. So you don’t have to choose between getting the best performance and getting the best price.”
The cloud-based supercomputing engine is a boon to app developers as it will make intensive computing tasks like genetic sequencing, run faster. Google Compute Engine drastically reduces a 10-minute process to a matter of mere seconds.
The service lets you run Linux Virtual Machines within the same framework that powers Google. But, VMware, Citrix and Microsoft users will be unable to exploit the powers of the Compute Engine.
According to the sources, Google Computing Engine has access to more than 700,000 cores and could cross over with each passing day. At the developers’ conference, a genomics app was shown to use roughly 600,000 cores. Supposedly, each core has access to 3.75GB of RAM each.
As compared to previous conditions, adopting with Google’s other cloud services will be more easy and quick with the arrival of the computing engine. The service is just what cloud customers were asking for – making it possible for virtual machines to run on the vast infrastructure by Google.
For more than a decade, Google has run and optimized its own network infrastructure and data centres. And now, it has been officially declared that the Compute is far more stable, scalable and cost-effective than its competitors.
The Computing Engine brings in scalability , performance and value of the highest order in the industry with an assurance of Google and its experience.
Google Computing Engine could be utilized to its fullest extents for apps that require more of computational power rather than being involved with data through input and output processes.
The company is initially catering the service to those who require more than 100 VMs.
In order to make use of the service, customers will have to approach Google’s sales force and better before time as compute engine will be available as a limited preview.
