As an iPad owner that is aware of the changing Web landscape and the fast advances that Tablet world is making. I was curious about what WordPress has done with WordPress.com blog that is hosting 18 million blogs are available now in an iPad-friendly interface, complete with touch interactions and easy customization. This is a huge achievement so I tested it on my iPad.

What Automatic the parent company of WordPress.com, has done is to switch on a new feature that transforms WordPress.com blogs into app-like destinations optimized for tablets. The company says it worked closely with NYC-based start-up Onswipe to to create a whole new blog consumption experience for the iPad. Onswipe provides publishers with simple tools to create tablet-optimized websites.

So go to wordpress.com and you see standard page and click in Chicken Involtini Part II: and you get the two images below on standard PC.

However on the iPad the view is different for the blog page. See the image on right. The work was done by onswipe.com. Nick Mornrik claims that the iPad optimized view is just like an App. It is pure HTML 5 on the backend. and it supports touch interactions. Swiping, Rotation and many other features of the iPad, here is what we see on the Tablet:

  • wordpress ipad pageHave the theme use an image from your recent posts as a cover.
  • Upload a logo to showcase your brand or personality on the cover.
  • Upload an image to be used as a loading graphic when visitors add your site to their home screen.
  • Switch fonts.
  • Choose from 9 different skin colours, to best match the feel of your site.
  • Enable or disable the whole thing.

When you tap to view a post, you get to see the full content with a different simplified menu and social sharing tools for Twitter, FaceBook, and WordPress.com literally at your finger tips. It’s a lot of fun browsing sites with Onswipe.

WordPress.com sees about 750,000 page views a day from iPads around the world. This number is rising fast and that is why they have made the investment in this technology.

We are going to have a good look and see how we can replicate it in other CMS systems we do development in.

If you are running your WordPress on your own servers, then you can get the plugin here: onswipe.com/wordpress/

These Blogs help me explain a little more then normally allowed in the 140 character real-estate of a typical Twitter posts. They may also link you to the actual news or site that can expands further on my comments.
