WordPress 3.2 will finally drop support for Internet Explorer 6 WordPress 3.2 will finally drop support for Internet Explorer 6

The most important news on the American Independence day was that someone significant in the web world finally drops the support for IE6.  WordPress has released an upgrade for the popular, self-hosted blogging platform. Unlike the last few WordPress upgrades, which focused on improving developer tools, WordPress 3.2 is primarily about changes ordinary users will appreciate.

The revamped admin section, for instance, offers a new “distraction-free,” full screen editor, and, as we noted earlier, this version finally drops support for Internet Explorer 6 which is a brave move that I hope is followed by others including DotNetNuke. Currently it is not a automatic upgrade process from the version you are running. but if you’d like to upgrade, head over to the WordPress site and download a copy of WordPress 3.2.

The theme for WordPress’ latest incarnation is “faster and lighter.” That’s reflected in new tools like the simplified admin interface, which offers a ful-lscreen editor mode. The full-screen mode is modeled on the interface found in writing apps like WriteRoom or OmmWriter, where the focus is primarily the text, and not the bells and whistles on the main new post page.

Another aspect of the faster and lighter motto for WordPress 3.2 means eliminating the cruft, also known as dropping support for IE 6. That won’t of course affect your site’s visitors (unless your theme has dropped IE 6), but it does mean that the WordPress 3.2 admin won’t work in IE 6, something to keep in mind if you’re upgrading a site that has numerous admin users.

For now WordPress hasn’t dropped support for IE 7, though an early outline of what to expect in WordPress 3.2 did say that this release will also start the end-of-life cycle for Internet Explorer 7.

Users will also appreciate the fully HTML5 new Twenty Eleven theme, fulfilling our plan to replace the default theme every year. There is a redesigned post editor and venture to the full-screen button in the editing toolbar to enter the new distraction-free writing or zen mode. All of the widgets, menus, buttons, and interface elements fade away to allow you to compose and edit your thoughts in a completely clean environment conducive to writing, but when your mouse strays to the top of the screen your most-used shortcuts are there where you need them. Press F11 to take my browser full-screen, getting rid of even the OS chrome.

On other front, WordPress 3.1 in less than 5 months the blogging software has been downloaded over 15 million times. Joomla just recently announced that its software has been downloaded 23 million times (note that this is the total number, not for any specific versions of the software solution). So to achieve such number in just 5 months we must congratulate WP.

Wordpress is great for seo, but i have learned that having a cms with built in support works best, especially with the constant change and upgrades with browsers and security issues. This version wordpress 3.2 finally drops support for Internet Explorer 6 which is a brave move.
