iOS 5 brings new life to ‘First Generation iPad’ – It feels like it's the future iOS 5 brings new life to ‘First Generation iPad’ – It feels like it's the future

This morning I decided to update my OS4.x to 5.0 on my iPad version one that I purchased the first day it was available in UK. Since then it has given me and my 5 years old son 100s of hours of pleasure that has made this device my most well spent £600 ever. iPad stunned me when it came out. For me it was amazing that a first generation device that normally is plagued with software and hardware issues proved to be absolutely perfect in every one of my tests - thanks to Late Steve Job eye for perfection.

iOS 5 upgrade was also stunning considering the complexities in both hardware and software. Connected to my much loved Vaio running windows 7 - click update - to be honest I cannot remember if I ever clicked anything else - it went through the process in the background whist I was writing a blog about something else. and suddenly it was all done.

I switched my ipad on and clicked updates and there were 78 little apps that also needed updating - clicked ok and 30 minutes later it was all done. All I can say is WOW - being in software business myself and being used to upgrades going wrong and error messages being a routine fact in a day's work it is just a joy watching not just an OS upgrade go without a hitch but also 78 little and large Apps upgrade being done concurrently without a single error.

Enough about how wonderful the guys at Apple are - some would say it is because they have so much money now to through at this. But whatever the means - I am happy owner and here are some of the good enhancements that I see.

Notification centre
Notification in previous version were mostly switched off as there were just too many apps trying to get my attention. I had them all switched off except for Skype.

I can now keep track of them all in one convenient location. Just swipe down from the top of any screen to enter Notification Centre. I can choose which notifications I want to see. This is just great. All switched off except Skype Mail and Calendar.

iMessage
Obviously I have everyone on Skype - however, all my iPhone and iPad friends can theoretically we sent text, photos, videos and locations and contacts. There is group messaging too. I probably will not use it as most of my contacts are on Skype - But the way it works is a lot nicer than any other messaging tool I have seen.

NewsStand
This was wonderful; it automatically put all my subscriptions into a newsstand - rather like the way Books worked. I love it - I will be paying for Guardian Newspaper at £10 GBP a months. any other free subscription will go there.

Reminders
I have not used this yet, but it looks very interesting. The location based approach is amazing where the list can be made together with location and dates. So the message will only come up if I am at home and I have to pick up my son from school at 3.00pm - If I am away from home in London, then most probably My wife is picking him up.

Twitter
I do like Twitter on iPad because I can easily access all 4 accounts I have in one place. On a PC I have assigned one account per browser so if I want to quickly access either of them I have to open the relevant browser and open Twitter.com

I know there are other tools available. But this is by far the best experience for me.

Camera
Well sadly I have iPad 1 and therefore no Camera. I have to wait for iPad 3 before I can use this. In general camera features in iOS 5. You can open the Camera app right from the Lock screen. Use grid lines, pinch-to-zoom gestures, and single-tap focus and exposure locks to compose a picture on the fly. Then press the volume-up button to snap your photo in the nick of time. If you have Photo Stream enabled in iCloud, your photos automatically download to all your other devices.

Photos
Enhanced Photo Enhancements with a few taps. Well I am not sure I will use this as I probably like to use Photoshop for that. But Remove Red-Eye and Auto Enhance as well as Crop and Rotate on the screen

Safari
With this version, even more web-browsing features to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Safari Reader displays web articles sans ads or clutter so you can read without distractions. Reading List lets you save interesting articles to peruse later, while iCloud keeps your list updated across all your devices. On iPad, tabbed browsing helps you keep track of multiple web pages and switch between them with ease. And iOS 5 improves Safari performance on all your iOS devices.

PC Free
With this version of iOS, we no longer need another PC to have iTune to activate and setup. All can be done wirelessly.  Backup and restore can all happen on the iCloud.

There are lots of other enhancements but for me here are my favorits.

WiFi Sync
Wirelessly sync your iOS device to your Mac or PC over a shared Wi-Fi connection. Every time you connect your iOS device to a power source (say, overnight for charging), it automatically syncs and backs up any new content to iTunes. So you always have your movies, TV shows, home videos, and photo albums everywhere you want them.

Air Play Mirroring
This is great for those that want to walk around the theatre and do a presentation straight from their ipad.  AirPlay now supports video mirroring. Which means you can wirelessly — and securely — stream whatever’s on your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S to your HDTV via Apple TV. Everyone in the room sees exactly what’s on your iPad or iPhone display up on the big screen — even when you rotate your device from portrait to landscape or zoom in and out.2

Mail and Calendar
This was a surprise for me. Free email and with iCloud we can share calendars with friend and family

Anything to do with Apple is perfection whether it is iPAD IOS 5 or anything else. For a person used to MS Windows OS this can be a bit surprising.
