Last month, almost after four years of its collaboration with the Google Earth Outreach team, Surui tribe in Brazil turn out to be the first natives of the country to receive support for their carbon offsets.  Now anyone can experience the beauty and diversity of the Amazon.

One of the famous Google tools – Android smart-phones will now help the Surui tribe to quantify the levels of carbon stocks in their lands in the Amazon Rainforest.

The Rainforest Alliance had nodded to the Surui’s proposal last month, which allowed the tribe to trade their carbon offsets in the international carbon market.

Accordingly, with the approval, it is the first time ever in Brazil that efforts are being made to curb carbon emissions – officially stated by the Climate Community and Biodiversity (CCB) and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). Hence, this will now enable the Surui members to sell the carbon offsets from its woodlands straight into the global market for the next 30 years.

Rebecca Moore, Google Earth Outreach director said, “It’s not just about absolute greenhouse gas reduction, there’s this social benefit to this project, too.” She further continued, “If you have different carbon offsets that you can purchase, the tribe wants you to learn about their culture, before you choose your purchase.”

Further, the Surui tribe will sell off the carbon offsets from the Amazon Rainforest to companies that wish to recompense for their carbon emissions. Industries indulged in producing electricity, transportation, manufacturing, mining and so on have a greater scope to buy the carbon offsets and contribute to conserving the environment. As for the future of Rainforest, it has been well-planned and secured as companies will be investing in the carbon offsets from these lands. Thus, the project not only aims to preserve the ecology but uplifts the social aspect of the tribe as well.

According to Chief Almir, the use of technology to preserve a traditional way of life is a good thought. Almir thinks that it is apparently apposite to make use of the technological advancements in order to fortify a tribe’s culture.
