Some advice to tablet makers trying to compete with iPad Some advice to tablet makers trying to compete with iPad

I have been watching iPad wannabees fail one after another, latest one is the latest setback for RIM and non-Apple tablets where, Sprint Nextel has pulled its support for a PlayBook model that would have run on the carrier’s 4G network.

The move, prompted by lack of demand from business customers, was originally reported in The Wall Street Journal and confirmed by a Sprint representative. Without Sprint’s backing the PlayBook will have no support from a U.S. carrier. Neither AT&T nor Verizon have offered backing for PlayBook, but both support Apple’s iPad 2.

RIM has recently suffered because of a lack of demand for BlackBerry smartphones as well as lack of Apps. Sprint’s decision also comes as tablet PCs have failed to gain much traction against the iPad. In a sign that RIM’s not the only one struggling to compete with Apple, Hewlett-Packard cut the price of its TouchPad by $100 last week. That device had only been on the market for a month.

So here is my advice;
  1. Ensure you focus on Flash and allow your device to run flash nicely.
  2. Make sure you get the price right and you must be at least 30% less than equivalent iPad
  3. Have the essential Apps available - for example Desktop Remote Access Windows and Macs, good browser, let it run web based apps like Google doc and Web based productivity cloud based apps out of the box.
  4. Must have social networking apps available out of the box.
  5. Must be possible to be able to remote access the tablet from desktops.
Add anything else that Apple cannot do and you might have a chance. It is no good to start selling at the same price as Apple and wonder why no one is buying when you don’t have robust enough USPs.

If you have any other good tips for tablet makers, shoot me a twit and I will add it here.
