NASA’s Curiosity is in the headlines for the successful finishing of the entire line-up. Relive the nail-biting terror and joy as NASA's Curiosity rover successfully lands on Mars the evening of Aug. 5 PDT (morning of Aug. 6 EDT) Those who eagerly awaited the landing of Curiosity on the Red Planet are as well equally happy for Michael Phelps’ enormous achievement at the Games.

The crane-sized rover, Curiosity, arrived on Mars and apparently reached out to accomplish the core task in space exploration – to establish if live existed ever on the planet.

Monday morning exactly at 1.32 EDT - the $2.5 billion mission was carried out with the six-wheeled, nuclear energy-enabled rover raged right through the crimson Martian air and touched down on the age-old Gale Crater. The rover was at the foot of a mountain – three miles tall and approximately 96 miles in diameter inside the crater.

During its two Earth-years and at least one Martian year long investigation, Curiosity will dig out the possible facts that would probably support the very existence of microbial life on the planet.

The life-sized journey from Mars Science Laboratory to the Planet had lasted around eight months and roughly around 353 million spatial miles. Just before the rover could safely land near the equator, it performed a run of in-flight acrobatic stunts.

The triumphant scientists at the MSL were certainly overwhelmed with the Curiosity success – along joyful tears and hugging each other. They even went to distribute Mars toffees amongst themselves right within seconds of rover going wheels down.

The elation at the NASA headquarters was clearly evident when Curiosity sent back pictures of it showing one of the rover’s wheels and its shadow on the Red Planet’s melting surface. Some more images from our neighbouring planet are being predicted along the coming weeks.

On the victorious getting of Curiosity, President Obama said: "it marks an unprecedented feat of technology that will stand as a point of national pride far into the future.”

According to reports, Curiosity carries with itself ten scientific instruments along with a total weight 15 times as bulky as the science payloads on the Mars rovers Opportunity and Spirit. The laser-firing instrument that checks elemental composition of rocks from a distance is among a few tools that are highly unique and first to appear on the Red Planet.

The rover is expected to work out this way – it will use a drill and a scoop at the end of its hi-fi robotic arm to gather soil and powdered samples of rock interiors. Curiosity will then sieve and hand out such collected samples into the laboratory for analyzing, inside the rover itself.

By far, Curiosity is considered to be one of the most sophisticated as well as expensive of NASA’s seven landings in the Martian atmosphere.
